2018 GAEA Elementary Art Teacher of the Year

This is my 13th year teaching at King Springs and my 17th year teaching in Cobb County. I love children and art is my passion. It only made sense for me to combine them for my career. I attended Young Harris College and graduated from Kennesaw State. My husband Tommy and I are both Smyrna natives.  He actually attended King Springs (many years ago).  We have three children.  I taught art in Cobb for four years prior to starting a family.  The nine years prior to teaching at King Springs, consisted of me being a mom, mural artist, and a volunteer at my church as well as Kennestone Hospital, and here at King Springs.

I really love technology and coming up with ways to incorporate it into some of my lessons.  I am an Apple Certified Teacher, Certified Microsoft Innovative Educator and a Local PBS Digital Innovator.  The Georgia Department of Education asked me to join the state standards writing team to add "Media Arts" to the Georgia public school offerings. This is truly a passion of mine and I enjoy assisting my colleagues with integrating technology in their classrooms.

All students at King Springs attend Art. Our children enjoy creating in pencil, pen, crayon, paint, markers, pastel, clay, collage and of course technology.  They learn about the use of line, shape, form, color, pattern, and texture in composition. I break down concepts to their simplest forms to encourage student achievement. I believe that Art is a vital and important role in education. Children learn using different methods and Art enhances the process of learning. Throughout their experience in art, children learn to see more, sense more, recall more, and they become more vitally aware of their changing and expanding environment. Consequently, they are able to express their ideas visually with a growing confidence.

Two different parents saw that PBS picks teachers that are "Digital Innovators".  They encouraged me to apply.  Not only does PBS recognize the tech-savy educator, but they also train the teacher to share strategies around digital integration.   I was excited when PBS chose me to be a "Local" Innovator for the upcoming school year.  Here is the video clip I submitted:
